design,      art,      about.

During summer of 2022, I led the development of a drop-in program at the National Museum of Natural History’s Cellphone: Unseen Connections exhibit, which opened on June 23, 2023.

The Analog Talkback Station is an analog interactive activity. It aims to invite inter-generational museum visitors to reflect on their phone usage and internet consumption, and their different perspectives. This drop-in program is placed at end of the Cellphone exhibit.

In this exhibit program, visitors answer a series of questions visualized on a whiteboard with magnets. While participating in the Talkback Station, guests are facilitated by a museum staff.

This project was done under the supervision and mentorship of Colleen Popson and the rest of the incredible Cellphone: Unseen Connections team at NMNH.

Media

My role in this project was to generate questions and design the visual format of the activity. I created four different interactive activity format using the same whiteboard and magnet set exploring the different ways that museum guests can answer questions to reflect on their phone and social media usage. I was inspired by various data visualization styles to create this analog activity.
I facilitated the play-testing of these four activities. They were play-tested on museum staffs and NMNH’s high school interns who are part of their youth program.

This was drawn by an exhibit team’s artist, and was used as concept art a lot as a guideline!

As you can see, the program I worked on is sketched on the right side of this concept image.
