IBM Resarch

Two sub-brandings of IBM Research for IBM Semicondutors and the IBM Think Lab space.

My main focus was to reimagine ways to use the scientific scans and diagrams of IBM Semiconductor chips into imagery and design elements that allows the IBM branding to have a slight avant-garde edge.
Part of my digital design internship during the summer of 2023.

Under the guidance of Ryan Mellody, Jason Lynch, and all the other inspiring designers, creatives, and researchers at IBM Research in Yorktown Heights.

1)  IBM Semiconductors

When I was first introduced to the Semiconductors, I was shown this book (above). The images were akin to an abstract artwork. I recreated and further abstracted the square shapes as graphic design elements for the banner.

Re-interpretation of microscopic photos of semiconductor chips (above right / right).
I took elements from diagrams of semiconductor chips as well as images of chip boards (left) to create graphics for IBM Research swag (above). I recreated details into graphic elements.

I zoomed in and out: from using microscopic images of chips (left) to creating graphics of entire semiconductor boards (right).

2)  IBM Think Lab

Exploring how to make the in-person experience of the IBM Think Lab space consistent with the branding of IBM Research through dinnerware and plates. Connecting digital design with spatial experiences.

I prototyped Blue China style plates (left) that disguises scientific diagrams (below) as plate ornaments.
