Indonesian Film Festival New York 2024

Visual identity for the 5th annual  Indonesian Film Festival New York, held in August 21–23, 2024 at the Museum of the Moving Image and SVA Theatre. Made in collaboration with Vanessa Shimon

IFFestNY is an annual film festival that celebrates Indonesian culture through cinema in New York City. The festival was started by the Indonesian Film Forum (IFF), an organization founded in New York City in 2016.

The first IFFestNY was held in 2017, and IFFestNY’24 marks its 5th Indonesian Film Festival in New York City.

IFFestNY’24 presents a curated selection of 10 short films and 4 feature films. It features films from various parts of Indonesia as well as the Indonesian-American diaspora.

It was supported by the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in New York, the Jakarta government, and various Jakarta-based arts and culture organizations.

The visual identity of IFFestNY’24 draws from the traditional Indonesian shadow puppet: wayang—a precursor to present day cinema.

The silhouettes of objects reflect the diversity of voices viewed through a screen, alluding to wayang silhouettes.

The objects represents the various ways of storytelling within Indonesian culture. Other than wayang, it features Garuda bird (a national symbol), Kancil (a children’s folktale), vase (ancient artifacts), angklung (a music instrument), and a traditional headwear from East Nusa Tenggara.

The use of simple black lines and Neue Haas Grotesk typeface offers the designs a way to balance and interact the diverse film stills and clips with the colorful simple silhouettes.
